Waste Reduction

All WGL facilities actively participate in recycling practices. Washington Gas has set a goal of diverting at least 50 percent of waste away from landfills and incinerators.

All WGL facilities actively participate in recycling practices. Washington Gas has set a goal of diverting at least 50 percent of waste away from landfills and incinerators. In order to accomplish this goal a number of different initiatives have been implemented. Within most WGL locations there is single stream recycling making recycling easier. In addition to the single stream recycling, Washington Gas actively recycles industrial waste such as scrap metal, universal wastes, including CFL bulbs, HID lamps, any non-alkaline battery, and mercury containing equipment.

To drive widespread engagement we have committed to providing more recycling resources and are piloting new initiatives, including recycling k-cups through a new program instituted in Washington Gas. Additionally, we are piloting a program that removes individual trash bins from offices and workstations while having communal trash bins in a few locations. The idea behind this program is that employees will be required to put some thought into what they are throwing away and whether it could instead be recycled. If successful the intent is to expand the program throughout other WGL facilities.
