Buildings use 40 percent of all energy consumed in the United States. That is why it is important that WGL not only delivers energy solutions to homes and businesses but also works to make our own buildings and facilities as energy efficient as possible. From offices to gas distribution facilities, we are constantly evaluating how much energy we consume and identify solutions to reduce energy usage, costs and associated environmental impact. WGL has conducted numerous energy audits of existing buildings, while replacing older buildings with new, highly-efficient ones.
Washington Gas’ Springfield Center, our utility’s operation complex, achieved LEED Gold certification in 2012. By replacing the old operations facility, we not only reduced square footage by 50 percent, we added energy efficient technology like a gas-fired Bloom Fuel Server, automatic window shades and roofs with high solar reflectance.
WGL’s state of the art LEED certified service center produces 92% less GHGs’ (compared to our previous facility). As we look for solutions to reduce our grid dependency at our buildings, we match 100 percent of our purchased electricity with Renewable Energy Certificates (RECs).
WGL Energy’s staff worked to get their Herndon office space LEED Certified as well. Furthermore, WGL headquarters is located in an Energy Star building that is also certified LEED Silver. And we continue to identify new energy-saving projects as we strive to lead by example for our customers and our community.
